YET another Scot with Newcastle connections McWilliam played for his hometown club Inverness Thistle in 1899 before joining the Magpies where he became a huge favourite.

Won an array of caps and medals in a glittering career in the same team as Howie before being injured playing for Scotland against Wales in 1911.

Lifted the FA Cup and second division title as Spurs manager before being tempted north with a salary of £1,500 a year, almost double his White Hart Lane pay.

But the sympathies of the Boro crowd remained with the sacked Bamlett. The team was relegated in his first season before winning the championship again the following year.

After leaving Boro he managed Spurs for a further year before returning to Redcar, his wife's hometown, where he died aged 72 in 1951. He is buried in Kirkleatham Cemetery.
