IN THE HOTSEAT - JULIO ARCA

I heard that you are still living in Sunderland, is this true? What parts of Middlesbrough do you like?
Sian

JA: I am still based there Sian. I am very settled with life in the North East and it's still only a short drive into the training ground. There are a lot of places in Middlesbrough that I thoroughly enjoy. Sometimes the area gets a bit of a raw deal when it comes to the scenery but I know of many beautiful places. I also love some of the restaurants. Sessari's on Linthorpe road is my favourite. I don't think I'm ever out of that place!

Watching yourself and Rochemback in the middle of midfield in the second half of the Tottenham game and the whole of the Wigan game I was very impressed and the two of you could create a great partnership. Could you see it working?
Nick Hill

JA: Fabio is a very good player and I think we work well with each other. I'm not sure whether it's because of our South American heritage but we seem to be on the same wavelength. But at the same time, I also enjoy playing with George and Catts. In a successful team, you are always going to play alongside different players who have their own strengths. I think we have good competition for places in this spot.

You are clearly an excellent player in central midfield and it looks as though you have been playing there for years. If a top club came in for you and you had the option to leave Middlesbrough for them, would you listen to their offer and possibly accept?
Jak Benoliel

JA: Thank you very much. But don't worry, I'm extremely happy here. I only arrived last summer but everyone has made me feel very welcome. I am not thinking about another club at the present moment. I have another three years to run on my contract and I definitely intend to see it out.

Julio who do you prefer playing for Middlesbrough or Sunderland ?
Grant Hewitson

JA: I knew I was going to get asked this question! I'm a Middlesbrough player and they are my team, no question!

Do you feel you have benefited more with your move from Sunderland to Middlesbrough since you have done well in your role as a central attacking midfielder and was it a wrench leaving Sunderland where the fans adored you and what made your mind up ?
Robert Thorpe, Pickering, North Yorkshire

JA: Yes, definitely. I think it was the right time to move for my career to progress. It was very hard to leave a place where everyone liked you but the decision was purely football and I'm glad I made it. I am thoroughly enjoying my role in the centre of midfield. I had never tried it before I arrived but I certainly feel happy playing there. I have to thank Gareth Southgate. He has done a wonderful job and definitely has a good eye for development. I would never have thought I could have played there so I have to thank him.

Who is your favourite central midfield partner to play alongside at the Boro?
Jono and Patrick Dooley

JA: I don't have a favourite as such. I think everyone has there strengths and weaknesses, including myself. George has helped me a lot with my game and probably allows me to get forward a lot more.

I'm a fan from Uruguay. From what part of Argentina are you? Do you miss it? And are you able to keep some of the traditions of your country like drinking "mate" over there?
Romina Arcari

JA: I'm from Buenos Airies and I do miss it a lot. I still have a lot of family there but I'm going back for the summer, which I'm looking forward to. I do drink mate, Romina. For those of you who don't know, mate is very much like English tea over here. When my family comes over from Argentina, they drink it all the time.

Who do you think Boro should sign in the summer to push us up the table?
Michael Wales

JA: It's not for me to say which players we should buy. I'm sure the management team have a clear idea of what targets they want. As for positions, I think we need another striker, a central-midfielder, a right-winger and perhaps another right-back. But that's easy to say from my position, it's the calibre of players that are the most important thing.

Next season you will play against your former club Sunderland. Will you still feel a soft spot for the Black Cats or will you show them what they have really missed?
Ron Serge, Oshawa, Ontario, Canada

JA: I can assure you I will be trying my hardest to win the game. Like I've said before, I am a Middlesbrough player now and that's the only thing I'm concentrating on.

If you had to pick one Argentinian to play for the Boro who would you choose?
Mark Anderson

JA: I think it would have to be Carlos Tevez. He has done very well for West Ham. It was always going to take some time for him to settle but he played a big role in helping them survive relegation.

Who is your best mate at Boro?
Mohammad Ibrar, Oldham

JA: I don't really have a best mate as such. Everyone has made me feel very welcome here.

How do you think the Sunderland fans will react when you run out, for the mighty Boro, against them next season?
Karl Owens

JA: Hopefully they will give me a good reception. It will be the first time I will be playing against them and I think the fans will get behind me. It would mean a lot.

Julio, now Sunderland have gained promotion to the Premier League, would you tempted to move back there if an offer came in or would you honour your contract and stay with Boro?
Liam Thompson

JA: No, not at all. My future lies here. I have moved on now and Middlesbrough is my team. I think this club can go a long way if we can perform to the best of our ability.

Where do you enjoy playing better central midfield or left-back? And which do you feel you play better at also?
Tom, Linthorpe

JA: To be honest Tom, I would have to say centre midfield. I know it's only been a season but it feels like I've been playing there my whole life. bviously I can still play at left-back if required but Andrew Taylor has done a fantastic job and has been a revelation so I think I best stick to midfield!

Hiya do you ever get nervous before a game? If that was me I would and I think you are brilliant footballer, you always try 110% in every match. Love you loads.
Katie

JA: I don't get nervous as such. It's more excitement. When you're in that tunnel and the music hits you can't help but get a few butterflies in your stomach but that's natural. The best players in the world get it too. I know that for a fact. This is one of the best leagues in the world and there is a lot of pressure to perform week in, week out.

I'm South Korean Boro supporter. To tell you truth, the time when you were a Sunderland player, I hated you. But now, you are Boro player so I support you. You are good player in Championship manager season 2001-2002. You must become Argentine national team player. You are so talented that you'll soon surpass Sorin. May I ask you a question? What's your impression of Korea? Vamos Arca!
Yoon Jong-Seok,
Wonju, South Korea

JA: Thank you - I think! I have never been to Korea but I would definitely like to visit one day soon. We have Dong Gook Lee in our squad now who is a very talented player. I think he will come back next year as a better footballer. He speaks highly of his country and says it is a very beautiful place.

What car do you drive, and what car do you hope to buy next?
Luke Howells

JA: I drive a Mercedes CLS but I'm not looking for another one at this moment.

After what some may remember as a torrid debut away at Reading - and a first season of immense personal achievement and equally huge promise in developing into our new midfield libero - is Julio acutely aware of the fans growing adulation for him given his numerous virtuoso performances in Boro's midfield. And does he understand just how appreciative the fans are of his commitment to the Boro considering his strong bond with our bitter rivals Sunderland and the obviously difficult decision he had to make in leaving the Stadium of Light?
Geoff Thomas,
Sunderland

JA: Thanks for reminding me Geoff! It wasn't a very happy day. In fact, it was a very painful one! I am aware of the support and I am thankful to the fantastic fans because that's what I play football for. I think it works both ways though. For me, you have to earn the fans' respect. I try to give everything I can on that pitch. Sometimes you will make mistakes but if you are wearing your heart on your sleeve, you won't go far wrong.

Noticed you have a new perm, like it very much where did you get it done at?
Rob Clapham, season ticket holder

JA: (Laughs) I get it the same place my girlfriend gets hers done. It's a hairdresser in Sunderland but thank you for asking.

You have obviously made the short trip down the A19 to play for the Boro after playing for one of our greatest rivals who have bounced straight backup into the Premiership. If you knew they would return to the Premiership at the first time of asking would you have left the club?
Tony Barrowford, Lancs (Also Alan Perkins, Normanby and John, Uxbridge)

JA: Towards the end of my time there, things weren't good. I wanted to play in the Premiership and I think Boro came in for me at the right time. It was a good offer for the club and I wanted to make the switch.

What is the highlight of you playing days and why? And who did you look up to as a child?
A
Hudson, Middlesbrough

Julio Arca - Photo-Brian Spencer, Highland Studios

JA: I have ups and downs like anyone but I tend not to focus on the negatives. I know that I am very fortunate to be in the position that I am in. Since I moved to Europe, I have been very happy indeed. I think I have adapted to English football pretty well, although the weather is terrible! There was only one person who dazzled me as a child and that was Maradona. He is an inspiration to generations from young to old. I still watch some of his videos. He was the best player I have ever seen and I don't think there will ever be anyone better.

Obviously you're a quality player, not only because I'm a Boro fan, you scored more than your fair share of goals from left-back for Sunderland in the Premiership and had countless great performances. Do you believe you have what it takes to play at international level, or is your central midfield position prohibiting you from gaining the recognition necessary for a call up to the Argentinian squad?
Ross Anderson, Redcar

JA: I don't think it's stopping me from gaining international recognition. There are a lot of talented players and I just have to be patient and wait my turn. I would dearly love to play for my country but at the moment the coach is only selecting players who are playing their football in Argentina. But I believe in my ability and all I can do is keep on doing my very best in a Boro shirt.

Do rival players feel the same as derbies as the fans or are they more laid back.
Craig Wilkinson, Billingham

JA: I know how important they are to the fans. And we will have four massive derbies next year. Each one of them is huge for the players too, I can assure you that, Craig. Take this season for instance, we might not have done too well in the league but we finished above Newcastle and in some people's eyes that is more than enough. I am confident we will be the top team in the North East again next season!
