Dedicated To The Boro!
IN the latest in our series on some of the fans nominated as our Supporter of the Season, we introduce the composer who loved Boro so much he dedicated a symphony to the club.
David F Golightly invested £30,000 of his own money into the ambitious project, which was recorded by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. A thousand CDs were produced and just 100 remain.
"I've spent a lot of time and energy on the composition, promotion and dedication of the first symphony, including the initial financial outlay to record the work," he says.
"I have been a Middlesbrough fan since my grandfather introduced me to the club when I was 12 years old.
"I dedicated my first symphony because I believed in the club and chairman's vision. It was a gift from a grateful fan."
It is believed that no other football club in the world has a dedicated full-blown symphony and if reviewers are to be believed it is a work of some quality.
Other compositions by County Durham-born David, who now lives in the Wear Valley, include the St Petersburg Mass, Rites of Passage and Moods.
The Middlesbrough Symphony is available for download by 44 different distributors.
In partnership with Middlesbrough Borough Council, David hopes there will be a premiere of the symphony at Middlesbrough Town Hall in September 2010.
His close friend, the world famous pianist David Helfgot, whose life inspired the Oscar-winning film Shine, has agreed to perform Rachmaninov's third piano concerto at the same concert.
Financial pressures mean the former motor mechanic has been unable to renew his Season Card for the coming season but he will continue to support the club and attend games whenever he can.
Over the course of the next few weeks we will be profiling other Boro 'Superfans' and if you can think of anyone more deserving than David, send along your nomination to media@mfc.co.uk.
