Jason Jets Off To Finals
YOUNG Boro goalkeeper Jason Steele is heading to Ukraine to represent England at the UEFA European U19 Championship finals later this month, writes RICHARD HINMAN.
The talented 18-year-old is highly experienced at this level, having captained the side on a number of ocasions, including their final Elite Group game win against Scotland at Bramall Lane.
An 18-man squad chosen by head coach Brian Eastick will fly out to Ukraine in time for England's first game on Tuesday July 21.
Steele played a major part in England winning all three of their qualifying games, against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Slovakia and Scotland.
They are now in a group with Slovenia, Switzerland and hosts Ukraine knowing they will progress to the semi-final if they can finish in the top two.
Steele recently put pen to paper on a three-year deal that will see him stay at the club until at least summer 2012.
The Bishop Auckland-born youngster has impressed at youth and Reserve level after graduating from the club's Academy but is yet to make his first-team debut.
However, manager Gareth Southgate stated earlier this summer that he may be promoted to number two goalkeeper behind Brad Jones this season after the departure of Ross Turnbull.
England fixtures
July 21: England v Switzerland at FC Metalurg, kick off 5pm
July 24: Ukraine v England at Olympiysky, kick off 7.30pm
July 27: Slovenia v England at FC Metalurgh, kick off 7pm
If England finish either top or second in their group they will play their semi-final on July 30 at either Olympiysky or Illichivets, kick off 4.30pm or 7pm.
The final then takes place on August 2 at Olympiysky, kick off 4.30pm.
