Defender on his move to the Riverside...

Ritchie De Laet says some good neighbourly advice played a factor in his transfer deadline day switch to Middlesbrough.

The Leicester City defender joined the club on loan until the end of the season this week, and was quick to reveal how his former Foxes team-mate, and current Boro striker, David Nugent played a part in his move north.

“I’ve been looking at the games, but Nuge was my next door neighbour so I know about what’s going on here and how we should be up there with the squad we have,” said De Laet.

“I’ve spoken to him and it will help knowing someone in the dressing room.

“He’s very happy, he said the facilities are good, the stadium is good, the fans are good, and he’s enjoying his football again.

“He was in the same positon as me at the start of the season and Middlesbrough gave him a chance so hopefully it can be the same for me.”

While speculation was rife during the transfer window – Da Laet wasn’t linked with the club until his arrival on Teesside on Monday.

“It happened quite quickly but when the opportunity came I had to take it,” said the Belgian.

“I’m a footballer and I want to play. It wasn’t happening at the moment and Middlesbrough have given me the opportunity so hopefully I can help the club get to where it wants to be.”

De Laet brings a wealth of experience to the club and was a member of the Leicester City side which won promotion from the Championship to the Premier League two years ago.

He also played a key role in Leicester establishing themselves in the top-flight last season, but says he is ready to make a Championship return.

“The hardest bit will be playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday," he said.

“But I've done it before and I’m sure I can get up to speed quite quickly and get going.

“As a player, you just want to be a part of it and be there for the team. I wasn’t doing that at Leicester and I want to be important here and help Middlesbrough get promoted.”
