Striker praises spirit against Manchester United…

Rudy Gestede says winning games is his priority after finding the net in the Premier League for the first time in a Boro shirt.

The 28-year-old scored his second Boro goal to spark a fightback against Manchester United, but one that would ultimately fall short as the visitors won 3-1.

“It’s a very good feeling [to score],” he said.

“Manchester United were one of my favourite teams when I was young and I had the chance to score today.

“But you have to focus on the result – if I score another one and we win the game I will be more than happy.”

Gestede praised Boro’s mentality in Steve Agnew’s first game in charge.

“We showed a great spirit and we stuck together from the start until the end,” he said.

“It has been tough for us, with the manager changing, so we’ve tried to be focused on the game to be ready in the best way we can.

[Steve Agnew] has been with us since the start of the season and he knows us very well. He tried to give us a boost and I think we did it in the right way.

“It was a strong team against us but we showed good character and had a chance to come back into the game.”

The Beninese striker says Boro can build from Sunday’s game as we enter the Premier League run-in.

“If we want to stay up, we have to fight and win games – we can’t wait for a draw,” Gestede said.

“We have to go for it and [on Sunday] we showed a good mentality. We were all together.

“I think it’s a good start for the next ten games.”
