Boro coach reflects on the PSG tie...

Craig Liddle believes his Boro youth team have handled their involvement in the UEFA Youth League extremely well so far ahead of the PSG tie next week.

Boro were handed a glamorous trip to face the French giants in the last 16 earlier this week and Liddle says there was excitement all round when the Teessiders drew their opponents.

“We all watched the draw together, the staff and the lads,” said Liddle.

“If I’m being honest we didn’t want one of the English sides that were left in because it would take that European feel about it away.

“We’re happy with the draw and it’s probably as tough a game as we’re going to get, but at this stage you’re always going to get the tough games.

“We’re looking forward to it and we’re excited – that’s the initial reaction.”

Boro reached the last 16 by beating Dynamo Kiev 5-0 in the previous round, but Liddle admits the scoreline may have slightly flattered his side.

“We knew we were able to compete but if I’m being totally honest, the result flattered us a little bit with the Dynamo Kiev game,” said Liddle.

“It was tricky, even first half. We stepped it up in the second half but at 2-0 at half time we felt we were quite fortunate. Second half we raised our game, upped the tempo and came out confident.

“It’s all part of their development. We’re going to different countries and preparing for games in the same way first teams do for European ties.

“I think the boys are just enjoying the experience of pitting their skills against the best teams in Europe which is great for them.”
