AFONSO ALVES feels his partnership with Mido is on the verge of lift-off as Boro travel to Wigan in search of their first away victory.

Following the injury to Tuncay, Alves and Mido have become Gareth Southgate's number one strike-force combination and the record signing believes they are ready to light the blue touch paper.

"I've enjoyed playing with him and we are starting to form an understanding together," he said.

"We linked up well at Portsmouth and we are beginning to understand each others strengths.

"These things take time and I am confident we will start producing lots of goals soon, starting with Wigan."

The Brazilian has failed to find the back of the net since his stunning free-kick in the 2-1 home win against Stoke but like all good strikers, he remains confident in his own ability.

He said: "There's no point in worrying. If I start worrying too much then it will be harder. The thing is to relax and put the next chance away.

"I'll be calm when I walk onto the pitch on Saturday and hopefully things will get better."

The Brazilian international was deeply frustrated with the result against West Brom but is determined to bounce back this weekend.

"It was very disappointing, we did play well but the ball would not go in. We just couldn't score.

"But the manager has talked to all of the players and told us to keep relaxed, go on the pitch, play our football and everything will come naturally."
