STEWART DOWNING was tonight named in Fabio Capello's 23-man squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Belarus.

Capello was in the crowd for Boro's 1-0 win at Wigan, although he had left before Downing brilliantly cushioned a header into Jeremie Aliadiere's path for the winning goal.

David Wheater and Adam Johnson are in the England U21 squad for Friday's European Championship play-off first leg against Wales in Cardiff.

Andrew Taylor is suspended for that game, while Rhys Williams misses out for Wales through injury. The second leg takes place at Villa Park on Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Jason Steele is in the England squad for the UEFA European U19 Championship qualifying round against Albania, Northern Ireland and Serbia from October 8 to 13. All the games take place in Northern Ireland.

*Second half substitute Jake Fowler scored the fifth goal with a fine left-footed shot in England's 6-0 Victory Shield win over Northern Ireland in Ballymena on Friday. Fowler's Boro team-mate Bruno Pilatos played the full game in defence for England.

Further games against Scotland and Wales follow over the next two months.
