Celebration Dinner Marks All Stars Success
TWO Teesside charities will each receive cheques for £50,000 when Middlesbrough Football Club hosts a sell-out celebration dinner at the Riverside Stadium on Friday November 16.
Stockton-based Butterwick House Children's Hospice and Middlesbrough's Teesside Hospice will benefit as a result of a Boro side's success in the Premier League All Stars seven-a-side football competition.
The Boro All Stars team, comprising former players, celebrities and supporters, beat West Ham in the final to scoop the £100,000 jackpot for the hospices, the two charities nominated by the football club.
The All Stars competition was part of Creating Chances, the Premier League's flagship community initiative that featured many Teesside causes receiving Boro player appearances and £2,000 cheques.
The celebration dinner, which will take place in the Riverside's Legends Lounge, aims to raise further funds for the two hospices.
It will be attended by every member of Boro's All Stars team including former stars Craig Hignett, Mikkel Beck, Bernie Slaven and Jim Platt. Singer Alistair Griffin, who scored a late winner in the final, will also be there, as will former world speedway champion Gary Havelock, actor Mark Stobbart and fans Tony Rovardi, Julian McGuire and Steven Aithwaite.
Boro's winning team, who will be parading the trophy, will take part in a question-and-answer session, while Alistair Griffin will be on the mic to entertain guests.
The event sold out in just three days. Representatives of both hospices will there on the night to receive the cheques from Boro and the Premier League.
Graham Fordy, MFC's Head of Commercial, said: "As soon as the Boro team won the All Stars event, we decided to organise the dinner to celebrate the victory.
"With the trophy on show, the winning players will take part in a Q&A and fundraising will take places for the two hospices, so it promises to be a memorable evening."
The Boro team are also being invited to parade the All Stars trophy at half-time when Boro host Tottenham at the Riverside on Saturday November 3.
Middlesbrough FC and the Boro players threw their weight behind the Creating Chances community initiative over a three-week period, with 25 local causes each receiving £2,000.
Boro stars also paid high-profile visits to eight local good causes. These included Gareth Southgate playing wheelchair football at Abbey Hill Special School in Stockton, Jonathan Woodgate taking part in a stopwatch challenge at Teesside Hospice, Stewart Downing judging a rap and MC competition for the Safer Middlesbrough Partnership and George Boateng judging a competition for Boro's Enterprise Academy.
