FA Cup with Budweiser
Fourth round replay
Wednesday February 8 2012
Middlesbrough v Sunderland
Kick-off 7.45pm

THIS will be the 143rd Tees-Wear derby in all competitions. Sunderland have won on 60 previous occasions and Boro 45, leaving 37 draws.

The replay takes place following the 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light on January 29. The winners of this tie will be at home to Arsenal on February 18, kick-off 5.15pm.

It'll be the eighth meeting in the FA Cup, Sunderland having won three and Boro just one, with three draws. That 3-1 Boro win came 37 years ago and was the last FA Cup meeting with Sunderland until the game 10 days ago. It came at the same stage on January 25, at Ayresome Park.

The game is the third time the sides have contested a replay. The first came in the first ever meeting between the two, in 1887, a 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough, and was followed up by a 4-2 Sunderland win on home soil.

More recently, in 1934, the teams played out a 1-1 draw on Wearside, before a replay saw Sunderland run out 2-1 winners on Teesside to take them through to the fourth round.

Boro finished the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday with no fewer than eight players on the injury list, six of them having scored for Boro this season.

Of the 42 goals scored by Mowbray's men to date, 34 of them have been scored by players on that injury list - that's 79% of Boro's goals this season.

Injuries and suspensions

While Boro have a host of injury problems going into the game, they will welcome former Black Cat Julio Arca back from suspension. He served the final game of his three-match ban on Saturday.

Faris Haroun will be assessed ahead of the game after he limped off during the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday with a hamstring problem.

Marvin Emnes suffered a similar fate having felt further tightness in his hamstring and again will be assessed.

Barry Robson has been suffering with a severely-bruised hand following a finger dislocation and is currently wearing a protective cast. He will be assessed ahead of the replay.

Nicky Bailey has returned to light training following a knee ligament injury picked up against Peterborough United on New Year's Eve.

Goalkeeper Danny Coyne is missing after limping off at the Stadium of Light a week gone Sunday with a recurrence of a calf problem.

Bart Ogbeche has been missing with a hamstring injury, but has now returned to light training.

Merouane Zemmama is missing having had surgery on a hernia problem.

Sunderland's recent loan acquisitions Wayne Bridge and Sotirios Kyrgiakos are unavailable for the game as they did not arrive in time to be registered for the first game.

Skipper Lee Cattermole will miss out once again with a hamstring problem picked up 48 hours before the initial tie against his former club.

Nicklas Bendtner misses out with a broken nose while Wes Brown, above, is out with a knee injury that forced him off in the tie at the Stadium of Light.

David Vaughan, also injured in the first game, and Matt Kilgallon, who both carry ankle injuries, and Titus Bramble, who has Achilles and calf problems, also remain on the sidelines.

In Opposition

If the Premier League started with Martin O'Neill's first game in charge of Sunderland, the Wearsiders would be top of the table.

New manager Martin O'Neill, who replaced the sacked Steve Bruce, has lost just twice in the 12 games in all competitions since he took charge in early December.

Those two defeats have both been by the single goal away to a side in the top four, Tottenham and Chelsea. Boro are the only team other than Chelsea to have scored against Sunderland in their last six games.

They have only failed to score in two of their last 14 games and haven't conceded more than two goals in a game all season.

O'Neill has never lost at Middlesbrough as a player or manager since his first visit in 1973. Since becoming a manager, however, he has only beaten them at home once, the final time Boro faced his Leicester City side at Filbert Street in 2000 - and Boro players scored both the Leicester goals.

He was the last visiting manager in a Premier League game at the Riverside in May 2009, when his Aston Villa side drew 1-1 and virtually condemned Middlesbrough to relegation.

The Black Cats are into their fifth straight Premier League season, having last been promoted from the Championship in 2006/07 as champions.

They made an immediate return to the top-flight following their three-win, 15-point Premier League season in 2005/06.

Sunderland famously won the FA Cup back in 1973 when they overcame Leeds United 1-0 at Wembley. The only the time they won was in 1937.

Vital Statistics

Sunderland haven't reached the fifth round of the FA Cup for eight years.

Boro's 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury in the third round is the only win of 2012 for Tony Mowbray's side, having lost to Blackpool, Burnley and Coventry since the turn of the year, drawing against Sunderland, Leicester and Crystal Palace. In that period Boro have scored just four times and have conceded 11.

Sunderland overcame Championship side Peterborough 2-0 at London Road in the third round.

Boro have not scored in their last two at the Riverside and haven't won there since Boxing Day.

Mowbray's side are, however, unbeaten in their last three games, although have won just once in the last eight games in all competitions.

Middlesbrough have not won a North East derby for six years and only two of the last 20 over the last nine years.

Sunderland have not won a North East derby for four years, since beating Boro and Newcastle in quick succession in September and October 2008.

The Black Cats have won just once on Teesside in their last nine visits, their only victory since 1997 coming in a 2-0 win in September 2005.

Since the teams met at the Stadium of Light on January 29, Sunderland have won twice, 3-0 at home to Norwich and 1-0 away at Stoke City, while Boro have drawn both their games, 2-2 at Leicester City and 0-0 at home to Crystal Palace.

Referee

Anthony Taylor - Photo-Getty Images

Anthony Taylor, Cheshire

Mr Taylor is not unfamiliar to Boro fans, who will remember him in charge of the eventful game at Elland Road earlier this season, which Boro won 1-0. It was Mr Taylor's first appointment of the season and he showed seven yellow cards and three red.

He was later in charge of the 0-0 draw at Reading on October 1, showing just the one yellow at the Madejski Stadium, to Tony McMahon, to whom Mr Taylor had shown two yellows and a subsequent red at Leeds United on August 13.

Sunderland welcomed Mr Taylor to the Stadium of Light back in November. He was in the middle for a 0-0 draw with Fulham.

In his 22 games this season, Mr Taylor has shown 72 yellow cards and five red.

Weather

A cold day, where the temperature isn't expected to rise above two degrees, will be the precursor to a night where it drops below freezing, but only just, -1° is forecast. So maybe a little scraping of the car window will be needed. An 11mph south-westerly breeze will make sure there's plenty fresh air.
