JOE BENNETT is a classy and skilful left-sided player who came through the Academy.

Born and brought up in Rochdale, Joe signed his first professional contract with the club in summer 2008 and is comfortable playing anywhere on the left, although he usually operates as a left-back.

He secured a two-year professional deal after a number of impressive performances in pre-season 2008 and for the Reserves.

His progress continued during the 2008/09 season and, after appearing in the summer Algarve tournament, he was named on the bench for a number of Barclays Premier League fixtures.

He made his first team debut away to West Ham United in the final game of the 2008-09 season and he was handed a new, three-year deal in August 2009.

Joe played a leading role as England reached the final of the UEFA European U19 Championships in Ukraine in the summer of 2009.

He struggled for opportunties at first team level under Gordon Strachan but returned to the team as left-back soon after Tony Mowbray's appointment as manager and made his England U21 debut in 2011.

His outstanding form was rewarded with a four-and-a-half year contract in January 2011.
