Cost £500 when he joined Boro as the club's first player-manager after an eleven-year career with Newcastle United that took in two FA Cup finals and a league championship win.

He was soon appointed secretary and his skills as a defender won him three further Scotland caps to add to those he had already won with the Magpies. 

He left to join Leicester Fosse where he continued to thrive on and off the field, winning further caps to add to his final total of 14. 

Later Aitken played for Dundee and Kilmarnock. He managed Gateshead Town and scouted for Arsenal before his death on Tyneside in 1955 at the age of 78.
