Artist and Boro fan Alan Johnson combines his two loves to create football-inspired artworks - including several featuring Middlesbrough FC’s former Ayresome Park home.
The former St Anthony’s pupil struggled for subject matter when at Art College and a tutor suggested to Johnson that he should paint what interested him. Decades on he has followed that advice to produce paintings of numerous football grounds in Britain.
The two paintings featured in Art of Ayresome chronicle the experience of going to Ayresome Park from a fan’s perspective and go beyond the 90 minutes of action of the pitch. Building upon an interest in painting people in townscapes, Johnson recreates the match day and match night at Ayresome Park from outside the ground, with supporters of all ages heading to the game with the floodlights and stands framing the experience.
