Nottingham-based artist Stephen Gill’s photographic practice often sees him return to Teesside to record the landscape during periods of change.
Football has featured prominently in a number of Gill’s commissions and exhibitions including Soccerscape at Middlesbrough Art Gallery with Tim Hetherington, which sought to provide a photographic record of Boro’s move from Ayresome to the Riverside.
In Art of Ayresome, Gill firstly captures the ground in 1994, a piece which formed part of his ‘Total Football’ and originally appeared in Creative Camera. The second image, from Fantasy Football Art League, revisits the site of Ayresome Park in the late 1990s. The stadium is demolished and leaves a void in the skyline, soon to be filled by the ongoing construction works captured in Gill’s photograph.
