An avid Boro supporter for decades, Tim Hetherington’s work has been exhibited throughout the UK and locally at venues including MIMA and the Chamber of Commerce.

Hetherington’s photographs of Ayresome Park featured here stem from his Soccerscape collaboration with Stephen Gill, first exhibited at Middlesbrough Art Gallery in 1996, which recorded Boro’s move from Ayresome Park to the Riverside.

The photographs featured in Art of Ayresome provide an insight into fan despair and jubilation during that final and ultimately successful promotion season at Ayresome Park, whilst also profiling features from the soon to be lost stadium. Although images of the North Stand’s wooden stairs, the fading paint of the Boys’ End, and the crumbling concrete of the Holgate appear to the untrained eye as simply pictures of a decaying sports ground, for thousands of football fanatics each location forms part of their own psychogeography and treasured Boro memories.
