Featured here is one of the author's favourite Ayresome Park photographs, but also apologies to former Boro striker David Currie for featuring it!
It shows action from a crunch relegation match versus Carlisle United in April 1985 at Ayresome Park.
Currie receives the ball, rounds the goalkeeper but manages to place the ball wide of an open goal from six yards. The reaction from the unforgiving crowd says it all.
Despite the defeat, Boro stayed up, but Currie was deemed surplus to requirements by Bruce Rioch and was released during the liquidation crisis a year later.
He signed for Darlington where he recovered his form and became Barnsley’s record signing at £150,000 in February 1988.
His goals secured a big money move to Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest side but it was a frustrating time for him at the City Ground.
He then joined Oldham Athletic in another club record fee, before returning to Barnsley. He had spells at Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town, Carlisle United before finishing his career with Scarborough in 1998.
