1: He was born in Zwijndrecht, to the south west of Rotterdam, Holland on March 29 1991 making him 25 years old.
2: He's a defensive midfield player standing 6' 1" (1m 85cm) tall and comes with a no-nonsense reputation.
3: He made his debut on a Friday night in October 2010 playing for Sparta Rotterdam in a 3-1 defeat away to Zwolle in front of 8,017 spectators. In goal for Sparta that day was Andre Krul, brother of Newcastle United's Tim. In midfield was current Dutch international Kevin Strootman. In opposition, at least from the 79th minute, Yanic Wildschut.
4: He made his international debut in the same season as making his league bow, going on to play three games for the Dutch U19s, the first against the Czech Republic, the next against Cyprus and the final one against Malta when he scored the only goal of the game.
5: After 58 appearances for Sparta, in the summer of 2012 he moved 122 miles north east to join Heerenveen, from whom Boro have signed Afonso Alves and Yanic Wildschut.
6: His Heerenveen debut came in a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of NEC Nijmegan. In the Heerenveen side that day was Gianni Zuiverloon (West Brom and Ipswich), on the bench was Rajiv van la Parra (Wolves, Brighton and Huddersfield).
7: He had to wait until the fifth game of his stay with Heerenveen before he was on the winning side, playing in a 2-0 home win over NAC Breda with the opening goal scored by Alfred Finnbogason who sprang to fame in this year's European Championships with, er Iceland. Shall we move on?
8: After 96 appearances with Heerenveen he moved to Bergamo in Northern Italy to join Atalanta last summer. Life 25 miles north east of Milan and 20 miles south of Lake Como seemed to suit the young Dutchman who missed just two games in Atalanta's 38-game Serie A season, both of those through suspension after accumulating five yellow cards by January and sent off for two more in the same game in April.
9: So far De Roon has made 204 club appearances, including four in the Europa League, scoring eight goals.
10: Perhaps most importantly he was given an upgrade in his FIFA 16 ratings, he's now rated 76 with a current potential of 79 - no, neither do we!
