With Boro set for our pre-season curtain call against Saint-Etienne on Sunday afternoon (3pm), here's a look back to our previous encounters with French opponents.
1958: Boro 3 Nimes Olympique 0
Top French side Nimes Olympique were our first-ever cross-channel opponents, visiting Teesside with Ayresome Parks floodlight's still in their infancy. Despite a stylish display from Nimes it was Boro who had their shooting boots on - Brian Clough scoring twice and Alan Peacock adding a third all before half-time.
August 1960: Lille Olympique 1 Boro 2
The two sides met in Lille during pre-season and competed for the Anglo-Franco-Scottish Friendship Cup. It was Boro who came away with the win with goals from Eddie Holliday and Alan Peacock.
October 1960: Boro 4 Lille Olympique 1
The second leg came 2 months later when Lille visited Ayresome Park. Brian Clough scored a brace as Boro ran out comfortable winners.
2013: Boro 2 Bordeaux 1
Tony Mowbray's Boro side hosted then French Cup winners Bordeaux in the final match of pre-season preparations ahead of the 2013/14 campaign.
Jonathan Woodgate started and played 60 minutes of the game before being replaced by Ben Gibson. George Friend was a surprise inclusion as he recovered from a hamstring injury, while signings Dean Whitehead and Joszef Varga made their home debuts.
4,000 fans watched as a well-taken double from Marvin Emnes gave Boro victory, Henri Saivet hitting one - an unstoppable curling effort - in reply for the visitors.

2016: UEFA Youth League
Boro's Under-19s came up against two French sides in the UEFA Youth League in 2016, a competition which we qualified for as a domestic champion.
The Teessiders' Academy side overcame Stade de Reims 6-5 on aggregate in a goal-filled first round but were later edged out by a single goal away to Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16.
