Aitor Karanka has hailed Dael Fry as a shining example to others in the Boro Academy at Rockliffe Park after the defender signed a new five-year contract with the club.

Karanka handed the teenager a first team debut on the opening day of the season against Preston and he praised Fry for his attitude and natural ability.

"I'm really pleased because he's one of the players who deserved this contract and our confidence," said Karanka.

"I said after the Preston game that he has everything to be successful in football and especially this club because he's a good player and a good kid.

"He likes to learn. He trains with us sometimes and he's improving every single day. He goes with the national team and is the best, he scores goals.

"I'm really pleased because he deserves it and he can be an important part in the future of this club."

Karanka says Fry has the potential to be an 'amazing' player and insists he will continue to look towards Boro's promising Academy talent for as long as he is in charge at the Teesside club.

"It's very important especially for the kids in the Academy as an example to all of them that the first squad does not forget them," said Karanka. "While I'm here I'll always be looking at the Academy.

"He could be an amazing player because he has everything."
