Aitor Karanka could have the option of adding Italian goalkeeper Michael Agazzi to his squad for Saturday's trip to Sheffield Wednesday.
A deal has been agreed with AC Milan for the 31-year-old to join Boro on loan subject to gaining international clearance.
Agazzi watched his new team-mates at Burton Albion on Tuesday on a night when Tomas Mejias played and Dimi Konstantopoulos was on the bench.
"I hope he will be ready as soon as possible," said Karanka. "He's trying to settle in as soon as possible.
"I don't think a player who arrives here has it easy to play quickly in this squad because the squad is doing really well and it's difficult for everybody to fight for a position.
"I know that he knows it will be difficult to take that position, especially the keeper's position, but he wants to come here ready to fight for his position."
