Northampton-born in 1945, John was a prolific goalscorer with Boro after he joined from Luton Town for £20,000 in 1966, scoring 42 goals in 72 League and Cup matches, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Oxford United on the final day of the 1966-67 season, a win which sealed promotion from the Third Division.

He was sold to Ipswich Town for £30,000 in 1968, but not before forming a formidable partnership with John Hickton.

John, who had suffered with cancer, is survived by his wife Deidre and Middlesbrough Former Players Association have sent her a cheque for £1,000.

Chairman of the FPA and former Boro captain Gordon Jones said: "John was not only a good footballer, but a good bloke.

"He was held in high regard as footballer on the pitch and a gentleman off it."

Middlesbrough Football Club would like to extend their sincere sympathy and condolences to John's family and friends.
