Boro's pre-season programme continued with a goalless draw at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.
The game marked Stewart Downing's first in the UK since re-signing for the club and the former Liverpool and West Ham man turned in an impressive display throughout as Boro played some good football without finding a cutting edge.
League One Doncaster were dogged, organised, and looked to play on the break, but it was Thorsten Stuckmann in the Rovers goal who was the busiest goalkeeper, and he made some important blokes to deny Boro an away win.
Boro threatened first when, after some good passing play, Downing was denied by an offside flag after finding space to collect a good ball from Lee Tomlin.
At the other end, Dimi Konstantopoulos was called upon twice inside the opening 20 minutes, first to save from Harry Forrester and then from Coppinger, who let fly with a sweet strike from distance.
Adam Forshaw tried his luck from a similar distance minutes later, and his effort grazed the wrongside of the bar. Downing was another to try his luck with a free-kick and shortly before half-time, Grant Leadbitter also went close with a free-kick after Muzzy Carayol was impeded on the edge of the box.
Boro almost went ahead in the opening minutes of the second period when Tomas Kalas fed Downing and Thorsten Stuckmann was called upon to react quickly. Moments later, Downing tested the home goalkeeper again.
In response, Forrester fired wide for Doncaster and a home free-kick was just wide of the mark, but Stuckmnann was called upon again to block an effort from Carayol.
Stuckmann wasn't as assured when he fluffed a clearance, but Kike was unable to capitalise with a strike which went high over the top. But the home goalkeeper was back to his best 15 minutes from time when Downing played a neat one-two with Kike before being denied by another good block.
The home side always looked a threat on the break, though, and when former Boro striker Curtis Main got through on the goal, Connor Ripley did enough to force him wide of the target.
