Boro go in to the game level on points with leaders Fulham who have a two goals better goal difference and a game in hand. The Cottagers are at home to AFC Wimbledon a few hours after Boro's game has ended.
Paul Jenkins' side have played four out of six group games in the competition, losing home and away to Fulham, but winning away to Wimbledon and the home game with Charlton which was played at York back in November.
It has been a season of much change for the U23s coaching staff with 10 players available at the start of the season having left the club either on a permanent or loan basis.
"It has been difficult at times," admits Lead Coach Paul Jenkins.
"But what it has done is give other players a chance and in recent games we have seen a lot of improvement and have played pretty well.
"The game against Charlton back in November was a real tough, tight affair and I wouldn't expect this to be any different.
"We both know the significance of the game and it will have an edge."
Kick-off is 1pm.
