The Boro striker had joined up with his team-mates at a training camp at RAF Leeming on Tuesday morning when the call came through for him to join the national team.

Assombalonga made a hasty return to Rockliffe to collect his boots before flying off for the game against Congo in Brazzaville on Sunday.

He could potentially win a third cap for his country in the all-important qualifier. His previous caps came against Tanzania and Liberia earlier this year.

DR Congo are currently second in Group G, a point ahead of Congo, and a win on Sunday could see them move level on points with leaders Zimbabwe, who travel to Liberia.
