Assombalonga headed home a Marcus Tavernier corner shortly before half time to secure Neil Warnock’s side a 1-0 win against Plymouth Argyle.

The newly promoted League One side already had a couple of games under their belt, and they provided lively opposition for a Boro squad who have only been back in training for eight days.

Warnock used the Home Park fixture to utilise 18 available players by giving them all some valuable minutes on the pitch, including a handful of 90s.

While match fitness was the priority, Boro played some good football, and could have won by more.

Hayden Coulson went close, and Paddy McNair and Marvin Johnson were both denied by good saves.

Grant Hall also had a good chance from a corner but Assombalonga’s goal was enough to see Boro to a win.
