The young striker scored in each half as our U23s strengthened the grip on second place in the Group G standings for the competition despite a late penalty from the hosts.

Neither side created any real opportunities inside the first 20 minutes, but Boro came close to breaking the deadlock when Stephen Walker was brought down inside the box. The Boro striker was denied from 12 yards by Clarets stopper Lukas Jensen.

But Graeme Lee's side did take the lead on the stroke of half-time, though, with O'Neill netting the first of his double.

It took seven minutes for O'Neill to double his and Boro's tally for the afternoon when he grabbed his second with a finish from close range.

However Burnley were offered a chance back into the contest as they were awarded a penalty five minutes from full-time, and Ali Koiki stepped up to convert the spotkick to tee up a nervy finish.

Despite the late goal, the Teessiders held on to secure our second win in the Premier League Cup this season.

League action resumes for our U23s a week on Sunday when Fulham make the trip to Bishop Auckland (1pm).
