BORO's Under-23s are back in action on Thursday night when they travel to Whitby for a semi-final in defence of a trophy they won last season.

A place in the final of the North Riding Senior Cup is up for grabs as Boro and Whitby lock horns for the second time in nine months. In July it was for a friendly that Boro won 5-2, this time it's for real as Boro look to reach the final of a competition they have won 54 times.

In the quarter-finals goals from Callum Cooke, Robbie Tinkler, Junior Mondal and Jo Wheatley put Northallerton to the sword 4-0 at Billingham Synthonia in January.

Whitby have had a longer route, following up a 5-0 win away at Guisborough with a 3-1 home win over York City.

The winner of Thursday's tie will play Pickering in the final after they got the better of Scarborough 1-0 in their semi-final.

"These games are always tough as the lads are up against grown men. Grown men who are decent footballers I might add," says lead coach Paul Jenkins.

"We were disappointed with the way things went against Reading on Monday (in the Premier League Cup) and we need to get this right."

Kick-off at the Turnbull Ground is 7.45pm.
