A routine-enough win over second-tier opposition - Wigan would finish two points outside of the Championship play-offs that season - would later prove a vital step on the path to Boro’s first major trophy.

Danny Mills’ effort deflected via Massimo Maccarone to give us the advantage, then Juninho beat former Teessiders keeper Gary Walsh to the ball and assisted Gaizka Mendieta for his first Boro goal.

Jimmy Bullard rattled in a free-kick to cut the lead in half but there were to be no further goals as Boro set up a fourth-round tie with Everton.

The win was part of an 11-match unbeaten league-and-cup run for Boro pre-Christmas which included League Cup wins over Everton and Tottenham Hotspur on penalties. Steve McClaren’s side then beat Arsenal over two semi-final legs in the new year before that historic day in Cardiff against Bolton Wanderers.
