Boro host Reading at the Riverside this Saturday in our first fixture following the international break (KO 3pm). Here's a look back at what was a great night for Boro against the Berkshire side back in 1997...
Bryan Robson's Boro team, nine games unbeaten, wanted a win to extend their lead at the top of Division One on this December afternoon at the Riverside.
The relegation-threatened Royals were themselves in the hunt for breathing space at the foot of the table on the back of a surprise 2-0 win over Boro's title rivals Sunderland.
A spirited performance from the visitors frustrated Boro, free-scoring for much of the season for over an hour, but a glut of goals followed in a frantic finale.
It was on 77 minutes that Boro finally made the breakthrough, Craig Hignett smashing in from the edge of the area (after encouragement from an enthused Ali Brownlee in the commentary box!)
Mikkel Beck doubled our advantage two minutes later, and Hignett was on target another couple of minutes after that. Beck was back in on the act on 85 minutes as Boro added gloss to what had been a dogged effort.
The sides would meet again the very next month, this time in the quarter finals of the Coca Cola Cup. Hignett was again Boro's star man, netting a stoppage time winner for Boro in controversial circumstances at Elm Park.
