The incoming Boro boss was joined by Chief Executive Neil Bausor, and spoke of his excitement at the prospect leading the club's promotion bid.
"I wanted the right challenge, and all the boxes were ticked at Middlesbrough," Monk said.
"Everyone knows the passion and desire that Steve Gibson has for this club. His determination was something that really struck me. Once I spoke to Steve it was very clear this was the right club for me.
"Promotion has to be the ambition, and that's the kind of challenge that you want. I've signed for three years but I want to do it in the first year."
Having experienced the Championship last season with Leeds United, Monk says he won't shy away from Boro's task at hand.
"Last season was one of the most competitive in the Championship in years - there's real quality," he said.
"But you have to trust your own ability, and hard work is the bedrock of everything we'll achieve.
"I've worked under pressure throughout my career - that's how I work best. After a difficult season for the club it's my job to restore confidence.
"We have a strong core group of players who I'm looking forward to working with, and we will look to add to that group in the right areas as well."
