A late goal from Sonny Finch secured victory for our Under-23s after Nottingham Forest were beaten 2-1 at Bishop Auckland on Friday evening.
It was a first win in almost two months for Graeme Lee's young charges, and was fully deserved after a strong performance which saw both goals come from U18 players.
Boro went ahead after just 12 minutes when Afonso Lindo converted following a corner, but Forest levelled matters soon after, courtesy of Billy Fewster.
Boro stepped things up after the break and only some wayward finishing prevented Lee's side from wrapping the tie up way before the final moments.
When it came, though, the 88th minute winner was worth waiting for as Finch finished with aplomb after being released on goal after a lovely pass from Joe Gibson.
It was Finch's first goal in an U23s shirt and the win was enough to take Boro to the top of Group B in the PL Cup.
