Boro's Under-18s edged a seven-goal contest with north east neighbours Sunderland on Saturday.

Yacou Traore and Calum Kavanagh each netted twice for Mark Tinkler's youngsters against the Black Cats, who ended the game with nine players on the field.

Caden Kelly had given the hosts the lead in the first half, but Traore levelled things up with his first of the afternoon five minutes later.

Kavanagh then put Boro in front with a clever front-post flick, but Sunderland hit back in first half stoppage time through Louie Salkeld.

Henry Fieldson was given his marching orders for the home side after receiving his second yellow card in the early stages of the second period, and Traore soon restored Boro's advantage with a cool finish from the edge of the area.

A Sonny Singh penalty for Sunderland briefly restored parity, but Boro were to win it when Kavanagh struck again with 78 minutes played.

The day got worse for the home side when Marshall Burke was dismissed for an ugly challenge in time added on.
