The Boro youngsters maintained their seasonal hold over Wearside rivals Sunderland after winning the final meeting of the season 3-0 on Wednesday.

Having already beaten the Black Cats in the league and the Under-17 PL Cup, Mark Tinkler's side made it a treble at the Academy of Light.

Josh Coburn opened the scoring shortly before half-time to give Boro the advantage - the hosts had lost Sonny Singh to a red card inside the opening 15 minutes - and Calum Kavanagh struck twice after the break to seal the win.

The victory lifted Boro back up to fifth in the division, but Tinkler's young charges are firmly in the hunt for silverware with an FA Youth Cup fifth round tie against Ipswich Town on Saturday and an U17 PL Cup semi-final tie against Blackburn waiting in the wings.
