Jonny Howson has pledged his future to the Boro by signing an extended contract with the club.

The midfielder, who has captained the team on a number of occasions, is now committed to the club until the end of the 2021/22 season at the earliest.

The offer of an extended stay is seen as a deserved reward for a player who has been in outstanding form over the past 12 months.

He slotted into a number of positions with ease last season – notably right-back and at a centre-back – but has reverted to his favoured central midfield berth this term where he has once again excelled.

Boro boss Neil Warnock said: “I’m just delighted. It’s another step in the right direction for the club. Jonny has had an outstanding time since I’ve been here.

“I’d go as far as to say that I rate him as the best midfield player in the league at the moment which I might not have thought before I came to the club.

“I only see him getting better in the next couple of years so it’s great for the club that he’s put pen to paper.”

Howson recently made his 500th career appearance and his 150th in a Boro shirt, and was named Boro Supporters Club 2020 Player of the Year for 2019/20.
