We’re delighted to confirm that England’s Lionesses are returning to the Riverside next year as part of a brand new international tournament.

Two fixtures are being held at the Riverside on Thursday 17 February 2022, with Sarina Wiegman’s England team up against Olympic Gold medallists Canada and Spain facing off with Germany.

It’s the first action of a round-robin tournament taking place over the course of a week, with two subsequent matchdays at Norwich City’s Carrow Road (February 20) and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Molineux (February 23).

The new competition is a prestige event, and follows the success of the Lionesses’ last visit to Teesside in October 2019, when they faced Brazil and attracted what was then a record domestic crowd for an England women’s team away from Wembley.

Baroness Sue Campbell, Director of Women’s Football at The FA, said: “This exciting new addition to the international calendar promises to further accelerate the rapid growth we are already seeing in women’s football.

“Giving England fans the opportunity to see their team take on some of the best opposition in the world on an annual basis will create substantial interest, leading to a broader fanbase and strengthening grassroots participation. It will also provide the England team with the best preparation heading into the major tournaments over the next four years.

Helena Bowman, Head of Business Operations and Community at Middlesbrough FC said: “It is a pleasure to be able to welcome the Lionesses back to Teesside and are proud to be hosting the inaugural matches in this new tournament.

“After the success of the Lionesses’ last visit and that of the men's senior side last summer, we’re looking forward to another red letter sporting occasion for our region.”

Tickets will be sold by The FA, with information and selling arrangements to follow.
