Boro new boy Marten de Roon already has his eyes on the North East derby against Sunderland on Sunday August 21 (1:30pm) and believes the game is 'really important for the players'.

De Roon put pen to paper on his Boro move this week and with the Premier League season a little over a month away, the midfielder can't wait to get started in the English top flight.

"They're all really nice fixtures but I think for the fans, the game against Sunderland will be one of the best," he said.

"That's also really important for the players.

"Against the big clubs from history, I think Liverpool is a nice club to play - especially in their stadium.

"I just want us to be good this season and hopefully we can do well and end in the places that will keep us in the Premier League next season."

The former Atalanta man says he received a word of advice from his fellow countryman and ex-Boro winger Yanic Wildschut when deliberating over his move to Teesside.

"I didn't know a lot about the city (Middlesbrough) itself but I know a few Dutchmen have been here in the past like Zenden and Boateng," said De Roon.

"I also played with Yanic Wildschut in Holland. I called him and asked him a bit about the club and players and he had only good things to say."
