Marten de Roon has hailed his 'amazing' year as the Dutchman prepares to make his Premier League bow with Boro against Stoke City (3pm) on Saturday.

A little over 12 months ago De Roon was gearing up to begin his season in Italy, having made the switch to Atalanta from Heerenveen in the Eredivisie in July 2015.

But after a sizzling debut season with the Bergamo side, De Roon was approached by Aitor Karanka and the midfielder admits a move to the Premier League was something he couldn't turn down.

"It's amazing," said De Roon. "One year ago I was in the Dutch league then I moved to Italy.

"But in one year to go from the Dutch league to the Premier League... it's something so big. To be part of the Premier League with Middlesbrough is amazing.

"I want to play my part with the team. I hope I can be useful and helpful and I think that's the most important thing - that I can help the team.

"That's by winning balls, working and coaching, which I think I'm good at. I think that together we can stay in the Premier League."
