On this day in 1987, Ayresome Park staged what proved to be probably the most celebrated 0-0 draw in Boro's history.

It was not the football itself which makes this game against Wigan Athletic one of our most memorable matches, rather the significance it held for our season.

The campaign had begun in inauspicious fashion. Boro narrowly avoided expulsion from the Football League by making hasty arrangements to fulfil the opening day fixture, but with the gates to Ayresome Park locked shut, were forced to play Port Vale at Hartlepool's Victoria Park.

Nevertheless, come May, Bruce Rioch's fledgling side were on the brink of promotion, and a draw was all that was needed to guarantee it as rivals Swindon failed to win.

Boro dominated on the day, and though they couldn't find a way through Wigan to win the game, the full-time whistle sparked wild celebrations at Ayresome Park.
