On this day in 1990, Boro produced a fine end to a difficult season scoring four goals against north east neighbours Newcastle United to avoid relegation.

The campaign had seen the club's first visit to Wembley Stadium in the Zenith Data Systems Cup final against Chelsea.

But a tricky year had also seen the departure of boss Bruce Rioch as Boro battled against a second successive relegation.

Victory against Newcastle on the last day would see Boro escape the drop, and also deny our rivals automatic promotion.

Bernie Slaven, who top scored with 32 goals, and Ian Baird each netted twice in what was a climactic end at Ayresome Park.
