All five goals were scored in the second half, as three points against the U’s on the final day of the 1997/98 season helped clinch an immediate return to the top flight after a one-year absence.
Alun Armstrong settled any nerves around the Riverside with a composed finish two minutes into the second half before doubling his and Boro’s tally a minute later.
Craig Hignett made it a three-goal advantage and went on to also bag a brace when he scored Boro's fourth.
Nicky Banger scored a consolation goal for the away side, but Boro claimed the three points to land the second automatic promotion place and a return to the Premier League.
