The mercurial Gaizka Mendieta produced a stunning display, including two goals, as Boro defeated Manchester United 4-1 at the Riverside on this day in 2005.
It took just 100 seconds for Mendieta to open Boro’s account when Edwin Van der Sar couldn’t keep out a long range effort from the Spanish midfielder.
Then a long ball forward from Mendieta found Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who showed great strength to shrug off Rio Ferdinand, and fire past Van der Sar.
The lead stretched to three goals just before the break when Kieran Richardson brought down Stuart Parnaby in the box, and Yakubu coolly rolled the ball into the bottom right corner from the spot.
Mendieta notched his second and Boro’s fourth after turning in Yakubu’s pass on 78 minutes.
Cristiano Ronaldo added a consolation goal for the Red Devils in the 90th minute, but it didn’t take the shine off a scintillating performance from the Teessiders.
