Boro battled back from an aggregate score of 3-0 against the Swiss side to claim an astonishing 4-3 triumph over the two legs.

Basel headed to Teesside with a two-goal cushion and grabbed a crucial away goal through Eduardo on 23 minutes to give the home side a huge mountain to climb, with Boro needing four goals to progress.

Boro gave themselves a lifeline just after the half hour when Mark Viduka scored and the Australian striker was on hand to half the deficit early in the second half when he rounded Basel keeper Pascal Zuberbuhler.

The home side then made it 3-3 on aggregate when Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink curled in a great effort into the top left corner with just 10 minutes left.

The fightback was complete with only a few minutes remaining as Fabio Rochemback had his long range effort saved but only as far as Massimo Maccarone, who turned in the rebound to complete the most remarkable comeback at the Riverside.
