Ray Parlour says he's honoured to have been a part of Boro's European adventures as he and his former teammates gear up for a night of nostalgia at the Riverside this Sunday.
Parlour will be joined by the likes of Franck Queuedrue, Tony McMahon, Stuart Parnaby, James Morrison and Stewart Downing this Sunday (September 15) as we celebrate our experiences in major European competition 15 years on.
A former Arsenal and England midfielder, Parlour spent two and a half seasons on Teesside, amassing 60 appearances, and featured in the Uefa Cup for us, including our first game in the competition against Banik Ostrava.
After a long trophy-laden tenure with Arsenal, Parlour holds his Riverside stint in high regard, especially being a part of a special era for the club in competing in and reaching the Uefa Cup final.
"I’ve got so much time for Middlesbrough," Parlour said.
"I looked at the team and where they were trying to go, there was some excellent players in the team at the time and it was a great time for the club.
"I think we got to our record position of seventh in the Premier League, got to the Uefa Cup final, which was a massive thing for Middlesbrough Football Club, and I was very honoured to be involved in that very successful era for Middlesbrough.
"We were always underdogs, especially getting to the latter stages of the tournament, the lads had done brilliantly to get to the final.
"I was very lucky to play in some good teams at Arsenal, double winning sides, but I enjoyed every minute of it at Middlesbrough, loved living up there for a couple of years, loved the people and everyone involved at the club."
Parlour will link up with his former Boro teammates to look back on the successful spell for the club this Sunday, and he's excited to be in their company again.
"It will be nice to see them all, everyone moves on after they’ve finished, I know some of the guys are still playing," he said.
"It’s so nice to see the guys, whether it’s Arsenal ex-players or Middlesbrough or Hull City when I was there.
"It’ll be good to see how they’re getting on – you miss that time in the dressing room together because when you finish your career you miss all the banter and all the good fun we have.
"So I’m looking forward to seeing the guys and seeing how they’re getting on now."
