A headed goal on his first game at this level from Hayden Hackney edged our U21s to their first ever win in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The first year was an 84th minute replacement for Kian Spence and two minutes later he had created history.
Andy Lonergan was called into action with just 90 seconds played, saving well with his legs as Will Miller struck low from inside the box.
An open start has the game stretched with both sides keen to have a go.
Burton saw more of the ball and again went close when a well-worked move set up Elliot Hodge and again Lonergan was in action getting down sharply at his near post.
Stephen Walker proved a handful for the Albion defence, but it was a driving run from Tyrone O’Neill through the middle that brought a free-kick right on the edge of the penalty area – Walker sending the set-piece half a yard over the bar.
For a second it looked as though Kieran Wallace had made the breakthrough as he arrived late to meet a right-wing delivery, only to power a header just wide, then Marcus Harness curled inches wide from the edge of the box.
It took a very smart save from Lonergan to keep out a 20-yard shot from David Templeton, though it was nearly Boro who opened the scoring four minutes from the break as O’Neill sent Kian Spence away just left of centre and a delicate chip was turned behind by Dimitar Evtimov.
Templeton wasted a good chance to open the scoring with the first attempt of the second half, basting well over from close range after making a good run to meet a deep cross.
Marvin Sordell was the next to offer a threat as the league side began to increase pressure, wriggling his way through to bring a save from Lonergan.
Dan Ward rued a missed opportunity when firing just wide from the edge of the box; less than a minute later he had a low shot deflected inches off target; two minutes after that he hit the angle of post and bar from just inside the box.
It took a goalline clearance to keep out a Liam Boyce header eight minutes from time, but it was a header at the other end that settled the game as Hayden Hackney rose to glance in a header from inside the box.
