Marcus Tavernier came off the bench for England U20s, who lost out to Portugal in the second game of the Toulon Tournament.
Tavernier, who played the full 90 minutes of the opener against Japan at the weekend, replaced Dwight McNeil with just over half an hour remaining.
Eddie Nketiah gave the Young Lions an early lead, but three goals in a ten-minute spell from Portugal put them in front at the midway point.
Boro youngster Tavernier was introduced to the fray on 58 minutes, and Joe Willock pulled one back for England in the final three minutes of the second half, but it wasn't enough for Paul Simpson's side.
England's final group game of the tournament takes place on Friday evening when they take on Chile.
