Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tomas Mejias has signed a contract extension with the club that will keep him on Teesside until June 2018.

Mejias originally joined Boro on loan from Real Madrid in February 2014, but only made a single appearance during the 2013/14 campaign after picking up a finger injury.

He put pen to paper on a permanent deal in July 2014 and has since made 16 appearances for Aitor Karanka's side.

The keeper has starred for Boro in the cup competitions over the past 12 months, with outstanding performances at Manchester City in the FA Cup and most recently against Manchester United, when Mejias emerged as the Teessiders' penalty shoot-out hero at Old Trafford.
