Boro and Villa go head-to-head with a place at Wembley in the Play-Off final at stake, and Mark Brennan’s wonder strike in the first leg of the Zenith Data Systems Cup between the two in 1990 gave us a commanding lead heading in the return leg at Ayresome Park.

Villa took the lead before Bruce Rioch’s side levelled to make it 1-1 at the break courtesy of Bernie Slaven.

But Brennan scored a crucial goal in the 89th minute to give us the advantage heading into the second leg, thumping home a left-footed strike into the bottom corner.

Boro clinched a 4-2 aggregate victory to book our first-ever trip to the twin towers of Wembley, where we faced Chelsea in the ZDS final.

Yakubu netted a brace against Villa in 2005 to help Boro on the way to a 3-2 victory at Villa Park in the Premier League.

Villa defender Wilfred Bouma presented Yabuku with the opportunity for his first when he failed to clear a cross and headed straight into the path of the Nigerian forward who lashed home from six yards.

Luke Moore made it 1-1 before George Boateng, who joined Boro from Villa in 2002, restored our lead before Yakubu despatched a penalty to wrap up the points.

Tuncay’s stunning overhead kick featured in the six of the best against the Villans in meetings at the Riverside down the years, and his match-winning strike at Villa Park is included.

The ex-Turkish international’s first from that clash in the Midlands in 2008 put Boro ahead before Steve Sidwell levelled.

Villa midfielder Sidwell's mistake two minutes from full-time was pounced on by Tuncay, whose first-time strike was cracked in beyond Brad Friedel.

Stewart Downing bagged a brilliant solo goal for Boro against his future club in 2008, latching on to a loose pass before cutting his way into the box and slotting it into the bottom corner.

Villa's Gareth Barry struck a late equaliser for the home side to rescue a point.

Downing would join the Lions in 2009, amassing over 60 appearances for them before joining Liverpool then West Ham and returning to Teesside in 2015.

Boro played Villa away twice in the space of a week earlier this season and Patrick Bamford’s 50th and 51st goals of his career helped us progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Bamford first chalked up his half century from the penalty spot before he rose highest from Marcus Tavernier’s cross to book our place in the next round of the League Cup.

Boudewijn Zenden’s first goal in Boro colours came in November 2003, with his glancing header helping us on our way to three points away to the Claret and Blues.

Zenden, who was on loan at Boro initially before joining on a permanent basis from Chelsea, headed in Franck Queudrue’s cross with a diving effort to notch his first for the Teessiders.

A League Cup winner with Boro, Zenden scored 15 goals during his two seasons at the Riverside before moving on to Liverpool.
