Boro's captain George Friend spoke after Boro's exit to Crewe Alexandra on penalties at the Riverside.
The Teessiders were two goals down after a first half to forget.
Jonathan Woodgate's side came back to draw in 90 minutes with goals from Ashley Fletcher and Marc Bola, but it wasn't enough as our visitors triumphed on spot kicks.
"It was the complete opposite of what we saw on the weekend," Friend said.
"We were hoping to replicate that and come out with a bang.
"But we just couldn't get the press right. We kept the ball well but didn't hurt them, and the two goals were a real wake-up call.
"He [Woodgate] was disappointed and we reacted in the second half, but too late. We're playing Crewe at home and it needs to be better."
