The winner came from the spot in the first half through former Boro man Danny Graham, while Marcus Browne came close to equalising in the second half but was denied by the framework.

“I thought a draw would have been a fair result. Neither team has played well on the day," Woodgate said.

“It was a typical Championship game – they had a penalty and put it in and we hit the post. Neither team was brilliant, but you’ve got to grind those games out.

“It’s fine margins, three games gone, it’s early days and there’s going to be times in the season when you lose a few.

"Just because we haven’t had the start everyone was hoping for, we’ll keep on going on the same page, the players are positive, I’m positive and we go again.”
